Tenacious Update: Bison Brothers, Bowie, and Back to Work

Post Holiday Reset

I’ve been feeling blessed to have the time and space to create art and I’m so thankful that people like you are interested in looking at it. Since my last post I survived the holidays and spent a wonderful week up at the Let’s Play Chalet in Arnold, California with my family and great long-time friends. It turns out I’ve been ringing in many a new year with this same bunch of hooligans for over 10 years! Good folks, good times!

I brought a load of art supplies to the chalet; we painted, sculpted, and doodled all week long. Coming back to real life was rough but I savored the feeling of having been away and took renewed joy in the little things that home provides.

In the Studio

I’ve been working away in my chilly basement studio, painting with watercolors, collaging found images and carving and printing linoleum blocks. I’m happy with my test results in my sketchbook and am moving on to more showable pieces.

Around Town

I’m excited to be working with the good folks at TUBE magazine in a Bowie-themed show called Life on Mars at the Blue Lamp. Reception is February 9th, doors open at 7:00. Here are some picts from the piece I’m creating. I used watered down block printing inks painted directly on the plate, then pressed rice paper onto the block. That’s why the print is in color with less of the carved background lines showing.

I’m also happy to announce that I have some prints and cards on consignment at Make Do Sacramento. A great little boutique just around the corner from Oak Park Brewery. She sells work from other artists too: jewelry, soap, and ceramics and cool vintage fabrics and treasures. We will be featured on Good Day Sacramento on Tuesday, January 19th in the 6 and 7 a.m. segments!

Lastly, I’ve been invited back to Sacramento City College to teach a Beginning Web Design course. I taught this course from 2006 through 2013  and taking a break a couple years ago to take a full time web job. It’s good to be back! Classes start Jan 25th and enrollment is still open. Students will work primarily with WordPress, building websites and learning all about the process, theory, and tools needed to create and maintain your own site or work in the web design field.

Looking Ahead

I’m planning to apply for more group shows this month and am working to build a body of work for showing and hopefully selling :-). I’ll be printing on more upcycled garments and housewares too. I’ve scanned some recent work for digital reproduction on cards and posters. Please let me know in the comments section if there are any pieces above that you fancy as a card or print!

I’m still working on illustrating that children’s book, but it’s hard. I’m out of my comfort zone. Thanks to the magic of the internet I’ve contacted some talented illustrators that may be able to offer some guidance.

As always, thanks for your support. Have a wonderful holiday weekend! Cheers.
